Maderna: Piano Concertos, Quadrivium

"...The musicians on this recording give the sense that they have studied and love this music—and there is much to be loved, even by the casual listener. The early works, in particular, are delightful in sound and conception, while the later works, though more complex, are also quite engaging…The sound quality is excellent—each instrument literally pops out of the mix when required. The numerous changes in color on the piano are captured vividly here as well. Overall this is a very fine release of music that should be better known, more listened to, and in the end cherished." --Fanfare, May/June 2012

"it’s always interresting to hear avant-garde composers’ early music, if only to defuse suspicion about their innate musicality. Bruno Maderna was a renowned, if short-lived, member of the Italian new music circle that included Nono and berio. His early works are slowly beginning to surface. This program contains two pieces from the 40’s, when the composer was in his 20’s, and a later piece for comparison... "Interesting is also a good description of this release, which gives much food for thought. Performances are good. the early version of the concerto is a first recording." --American Record Guide, March/April 2012
