Baroque Trumpet Concertos

There is no sound more invigorating than the clarion call of the Baroque trumpet. The instrument's clear, expressive tone is ideally suited to the melodic inventiveness of Baroque composers. This recording features the legendary trumpeter Maurice André in a program of concertos by familiar composers such as Telemann, Vivaldi and Torelli. Most impressive are two concertos by Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel, a contemporary of Telemann.

André is one of the great trumpet players in all the world and this repertoire is ideally suited to his talents. The works call for razor sharp articulation, smoothness of tone and remarkable agility. André dances through the Vivace movement of Telemann's Concerto for trumpet, strings and continuo in C minor with dexterity and humor. Most stirring is the grand Concerto for 6 trumpets, strings and continuo by Stölzel. The work features André and some of his students in a work that is grandly dramatic.
